Gyan mudra helps to sharpen the memory, improves the mental focus, concentration and spiritual feeling.  The tip of the thumb has centers for pituitary and other endocrine glands. So  pressing of a thumb tip activates them. Gyna Mudra, is a classic energy sealing Mudra used in Meditations. Gyan comes from the Sanskrit word to Hindi as “Gyan” or “Guyan” meaning knowledge. The Gyana Mudra is the Mudra of Knowledge and Wisdom.

The science of yoga also describes these as a means of controlling or altering the mood by reorienting or focusing the flow of prana (vital spiritual energy) in desired direction or concentrating it at specific extrasensory nuclei inside the body. This is why modern yoga literature also explains mudras as "seal" or "circuit bypass" for vital energy currents.

The palms and fingers of the hands contain many nerve root endings, which constantly emit bioelectric energy. Touching or pressing specific points on the fingers and the thumb folded in specific manner completes an energy circuit and activates specific nerve or nerve bundle and thus triggers specific signals because of that certain mudras are suitable for certain kinds of mental and physical effects. The importance of specific points and portions of hand (and other parts of the body) can also be seen in healing effects of acupressure on the physical body. Being emanated primarily from the science of spirituality, the yoga practices pertain to consciousness force. The advanced effects of yoga, and of the hand mudras in particular are therefore associated with mental refinement, deep meditation and spiritual conditioning. However, like the asanas, in elementary practices practices as well, when one properly practices these as physical exercises, the mudras induce soothing effects on the mind body system. In this article we shall consider some such elementary aspects.

When this gesture is employed to heal physical complaints, it makes no difference whether the Jnana Mudra or the Chin Mudra (Ćin Mudra) is practiced. According to Keshav Dev, this mudra is a universal remedy for improving states of mental tension and disorder, as well as for promoting memory and concentration.

It clears the mind-and we all want to have a "clear head" in any situation. It is also used for insomnia, as well as sleepiness depression, and high blood pressure. This mudra activates the metal (white gold) element and is associated with the color white like a sun in midday. White is the apparent void in which fullness is concealed. White is the color of birth and death, of a new beginning and completion. White is also the color of unity and peace and clarity and purity. White clears the mind and brings peace to the soul.

The tips of both the thumbs have three main acupressure points connected with the brain, pineal gland and pituitary gland. Pressure applied at these points results in the generation of an electromagnetic current, which makes the brain and the pineal gland more active. This enhances memory, concentration and thinking capabilities. When one sits in Jnana Mudra, the first finger applies pressure on the thumb at this specific point, which naturally brings about the above advantages.

The Pineal gland is located in the space between the eyebrows. In Yoga, it has a correlation with the Ajna Chakra. It is very active in children but after the age of 8 or 9, it’s activity decreases and the pituitary gland becomes more active. As a result, emotions become more intense. This is the reason why some children become emotionally unbalanced and mentally perturbed with the onset of puberty, and end up with indulging in untoward actions. In order to develop the pineal gland and delay its atrophy, as well as to bring the pituitary gland under control, it is necessary to inculcate the practice of asana, pranayama, mudra, etc. in children when they reach the age of 7 to 8 years.



Jnana mudra is used as a meditative gesture. Hence sit in any comfortable meditation asana like padmasana, sukhasana, swastikasana or siddhasana.

Fold the index finger and let it touch the base of the thumb. The forefinger forms a circle, but the thumb points straight out.

Straighten the other three fingers gently.

Place your hands on the knees with palm downwards.

The three fingers should point forward and downwards.

Adjust your position of the hands and relax the shoulders.

Keep the spine straight and practice your meditation technique.

Continue in this position for the full duration of your meditation.
